Sangria

The great thing about Sangria is that you can enjoy it any time, anywhere. You can be pretty flexible with the ingridients and amounts - it's all about experimenting to find out what you like best. It is made differently everywhere and you can even make it with Cava instead of red wine if you like! You remember that cheap bottle of plonk your mates brought round last time... well it will probably be great for Sangria making. The Spanish use cheap table wine in most sangrias so don't go pouring in your best vintage!

Ingredients:

1 bottle of red wine, we prefer one of the full bodied Riojas, but any red wine you enjoy will be great   Sangria recipe from Barcelona Flats
2 shots of Bacardi or Gin, or Brandy or Rum - whichever you like the most
1 lemon wedge
1 orange wedge
1 tbs sugar
2 cups of ginger ale or soda water

Pour the red wine into a pitcher, add juice from squeezed lemon and orange, and throw the remaining fruit wedges into a mixture. Stir in sugar, making sure it dissolves well and add the spirit of your choice (at Barcelona Flats we like it with Rum or Brandy).
Chill overnight and just before serving add the ginger ale or soda water!

This is just a basic recipe, and the great thing with sangria is that you can customise it to your liking by adding cubed fruit of your choice. We have seen Sangrias made with apples, strawberries, kiwis, grapes, pears….the choice is yours! In colder months it tastes great with some ginger or cinnamon added. Just don’t forget it needs to be very well chilled, and preferably put away overnight so the ingredients can marinate with each other. If you’re in a rush, serve it over plenty of ice.

Of course Sangria tastes the best when drunk in Spain! Take a look at our  Barcelona Flats  where you might like to enjoy a glass on the terrace, on the beach, on a tree lined Rambla, in El Borne........
