What are the top Barcelona attractions?
Difficult to answer, as Barcelona has SO many great attractions. Obviously the Gaudi works.... including;
Sagrada Familia - the unfinished work of Antoni Gaudi. This remarkable piece of architecture is a cathedral, although today it is more a shrine to tourism. Even if you are only in Barcelona for a short break you should visit this masterpiece.
Also a Gaudi masterpiece is the Casa Mila (La Pedrera). Flowing lines, apparently inspired by Gaudi´s interpretation of the sea, are repeated in this building as they are in Parc Guell.
Of course, you have to walk Las Ramblas. A remarkable, thriving place with shops, street entertainment and human "sculptures", this is one of the must do´s in Barcelona. As you pass along it´s length, and we suggest you start at Plaça Catalunya and walk down the hill, you will quickly become embroiled in the unique Rambla atmosphere. There are so many attractions to see on La Rambla that we cannot list all of them. However, remember to have a drink from the "font" (drinking fountain) at the very top of La Rambla as everyone who does will fall in love with the city and come back again. Further down is La Boqueria market. The vividness of the colour and the variety of fruit, vegatables and, of course, fish are a sight to behold. They also do wonderful fresh friut juices in the market which are very refreshing and a real tonic as you meander down towards the old port of Barcelona. We recommend two things: Allow plenty of time to walk La Rambla, perhaps even two or three hours. Secondly, if you want to eat or drink, go to the left of the Rambla (as you walk down the hill towards the old port) and you will find much better value. Placa Reial, Calle Canuda, Calle Ample, Calle Merce all offer much better places to eat and drink and there are still plenty of places with a terrace.
Gaudi was a lucky man. He had a generous benefactor and it was this benefactor who commissioned Gaudi to construct a house and gardens on the then edge of Barcelona. This has become Parc Guell and is now a very popular place to visit. Not only can you see the famous Gaudi dragon wall but the parc has a very pleasant walk and magnificent views of the city of Barcelona, including the Sagrada Familia and Montjuic. You can also make out the famous criss cross street layout of Barcelona and see the wide streets such as Paseo de Gracia and Marina.
Camp Nou is home to both Barcelona FC and the Museu de Futbol Club Barcelona. Built in the 1950s, it is a giant of a stadium with a capacity of 120,000 making Camp Nou one of the largest stadiums in the World. The museum is worth a visit, not only to see the scale of the stadium but also to answer the question, why Barcelona is Barcelona FC (Futbol Club) not CF (Club de Futbol) like the rest of the Spanish teams. (A clue: something to do with an Englishman). Some of the world´s greatest footballers have played for Barca including Maradona and Cruyf and not forgetting some of the current greats including Henry and Messi. Many people will be very unhappy if current rumours about Ronaldinho are true and he leaves Barca. Ronaldinho, until recently, has been considered an inspiration at the club and if he does leave he will surely deserve a mention in the Museu de Futbol Club Barcelona.
The Cathedral is one of the best examples of 14th Gothic Catalan architecture. Currently undergoing some renovation work some of it´s beauty is hidden behind scaffolding. However, it´s majesty is still present to all who pass by or enter. When inside have a look at the crypt and tomb of Santa Eulalia.
If you are on a short break in Barcelona there will only be so many museums that you will be able to visit. Besides the Picasso Museum, Salvador Dali Museum, Fundacio de Joan Miro, one of the best for understanding a little more about Barcelona is the Museu d´Historia de la Ciutat. On Placa Del Rei (Square of the King). This museum gives real insight into the city and includes a trip underneath the square itself to ruins from the city of Barcelona in Roman times. You leave the museum through a church and grand hall back into Placa del Rei. It is one of the most architecturally interesting squares in Barcelona but is now put to good modern use, often hosting free Jazz concerts during the afternoon or night.
All these sights and attractions are within a short trip from Barcelona Flats flat or apartment using the Metro or the bus. Many of the Barcelona Flats flats and apartments are within a street or two of the Picasso Museum, and the Cathedral.
