I have heard there is a problem with pickpockets.  Is this true?

Barcelona is a capital city (of Catalunya).  Like any capital city there can be problems.  Here in Barcelona, if you are in the Rambla, on Metro line 1 or 3, the Pedrera, around the Cathedral, the Barri Gotic area, El Borne and Plaça Catalunya it is a problem.  Cafe Zurich, Plaça Catalunya is a particular hotspot.  Distraction is a favorite technique so you have to have your wits about you.  HOWEVER, if you take some precautions you are much less likely to suffer a problem.  Barcelona Flats advise the following;

  • At cash machines, one person should do the transaction and one person should face outwards
  • Always wear handbags with a shoulder strap and have the flap facing your body.
  • Keep wallets in pockets with a zip, if possible.  If not, put it in a front pocket.
  • Wear your backpack to the front, not over your back
  • Never put your bag on the floor in a cafe or restaurant, always keep a leg or something through the strap.
  • Don´t keep all your cash and cards in the one wallet in case you are unlucky enough to get caught.
  • If you think you someone is trying to pickpocket you or someone else SHOUT LOUDLY.
